Leather Couch Cleaning and Care: Restore, Protect, and Preserve

Leather is durable, but without proper care it can crack, fade and lose its natural lustre. Body oils, sweat, food and drink spills and everyday dirt slowly build up in the surface. Regular leather couch cleaning, followed by conditioning and protection, keeps the leather soft and helps it last longer.

Wundaguard has cared for furniture in Sydney for over 40 years, and leading furniture retailers and upholsterers recommend us to their customers. This guide explains how to clean a leather couch at home, which household products to keep away from it, and when a professional leather clean is the better choice.

  • Clean the leather first, condition it second and protect it third, because each product does a different job.
  • Use products made for leather, because household sprays, wipes and oils can damage the finish.
  • Professional leather cleaning from Wundaguard starts from $66 per seat.

Why Does a Leather Couch Need Regular Cleaning?

Leather looks tough, but it is porous. When it is left bare, it soaks up the oils from skin and hair, along with spills and grime. That build-up is what dulls the colour and causes the worn, darkened patches you see on the arms and headrests of a lounge that gets used every day.

Cleaning removes that build-up before it breaks the leather down. Conditioning then replaces lost moisture so the leather stays soft instead of drying out and cracking. Protection adds a barrier, so the next spill sits on the surface long enough for you to blot it away.

How to Clean a Leather Couch at Home

Before you start, check what kind of leather you have. The Wundaguard leather products are made for top-coated leather, which has a protective finish, and they suit furniture, car interiors, shoes and handbags. If you are not sure whether your couch has a top coat, or the label says it is a delicate aniline or semi-aniline leather, call us before you treat it at home.

  1. Clean the leather. Apply Wundaguard Leather Cleaner with a soft cloth. It removes dirty marks, food and drink stains, spills and the build-up of sweat and body oil.
  2. Condition the leather. Once the couch is clean, apply Wundaguard Leather Conditioner to keep the leather soft. Its conditioning and moisturising agents and ultraviolet filters help reduce fading and the effects of wear.
  3. Protect the clean surface. Finish with Wundaguard Leather Protector, a water-based cream that leaves an invisible barrier against spills and stains.

What Is the Best Cleaner for a Leather Lounge?

The best cleaner for a leather lounge is one made for leather rather than a general household product. Wundaguard sells its leather care range online, made with the same quality formula our technicians trust when they clean leather furniture. The range is pH balanced and safe for top-coated leather.

  • Leather Cleaner 250mL ($29.95): removes dirty marks, food and drink stains, spills and the build-up of sweat and body oil.
  • Leather Conditioner 250mL ($49.95): keeps the leather soft and helps reduce fading and wear.
  • Leather Protector 250mL ($59.95): protects against spills and stains and helps stop colour and dye transfer from clothing.
  • Leather Maintenance Kit ($79): contains the Leather Cleaner, the Leather Conditioner and two applicator cloths. The Leather Protector is sold separately.

What Should You Never Use to Clean Leather?

Many common household products are the wrong choice for leather, and most of them can cause lasting damage to the coating or the fibres underneath. Keep these products off your leather couch:

  • Baby wipes and disinfectant wipes
  • Vinegar or bicarb soda
  • Dishwashing liquid, all-purpose sprays and cream cleansers
  • Magic erasers and window cleaners
  • Olive oil or coconut oil

Baby wipes are a good example of why this matters. Their ingredients can weaken the coating on the leather and dry it out, but the damage builds slowly, so most people never connect it with the wipes. A cleaner made for leather lifts the dirt without stripping the coating.

When Should You Book Professional Leather Couch Cleaning?

Home care keeps a leather couch looking good between professional cleans. A professional clean is worth booking when the arms and headrests have darkened, when the leather has lost its colour and softness, or when you have a delicate aniline or semi-aniline lounge that you would rather not treat yourself.

Our technicians clean aniline, semi-aniline, pigmented and bonded leather. A Wundaguard leather clean follows five steps:

  1. We inspect the leather type, the finish and the problem areas.
  2. We gently lift the surface dirt and oils.
  3. We deep clean with our professional leather cleaner to remove embedded grime.
  4. We condition the leather to restore softness and help prevent cracking.
  5. If you choose, we apply a protective layer that resists stains, spills and UV damage.

Professional leather cleaning starts from $66 per seat. After a clean you can expect brighter colour, a softer feel, less noticeable light scratches and the dirt and oils removed. Cleaning does not fix cracks, tears, peeling or stretched leather, because it improves how the leather looks rather than its structure. We clean genuine leather only, so vinyl and faux leather couches are not something we take on.

When Is the Best Time to Protect Leather Furniture?

Leather protection works best on leather that is new or freshly cleaned, before spills and body oils have had a chance to build up. The ideal time is just after a new lounge is delivered. If your couch has had a few years of use, we clean it first and then protect it, so the protection seals clean leather rather than grime.

Once the leather is protected, spills sit on the surface for longer so you have time to blot them, and everyday marks wipe away more easily. You can read more about the treatment on our leather furniture protection page.

Leather Couch Cleaning and Care Questions

Can I use baby wipes on a leather couch?

We do not recommend it. Baby wipes contain mild solvents, preservatives, surfactants and fragrances that keep them moist in the packet. Over time those ingredients can weaken the coating on the leather, leave shiny or sticky patches and dry the leather out. Use a cleaner made for leather instead.

Does the Leather Maintenance Kit include the Leather Protector?

No. The Leather Maintenance Kit contains the 250mL Leather Cleaner, the 250mL Leather Conditioner and two applicator cloths. If you also want a barrier against spills and dye transfer from clothing, the Leather Protector 250mL is sold separately.
