Why velvet needs a different clean

Velvet is a pile fabric. Thousands of short upright fibres give it the depth of colour and the soft hand, and those same fibres are what make it hard to clean. Wet it unevenly and the pile crushes and dries in a different direction, which reads as a stain even when the fabric is clean. Rub it and the pile flattens permanently. The fibre matters too: cotton and viscose velvets mark far more easily than polyester velvet, and each is cleaned differently.

We identify the fibre and test an unseen patch before the seats are touched, then choose low-moisture cleaning or a controlled clean based on what the velvet can take. What velvet couch cleaning involves

Inspection and fibre test: cotton, viscose, silk blend or polyester velvet, plus a hidden test patch for colour and pile behaviour.
Dry soil removal: careful vacuuming with the pile, never against it, to lift grit before any cleaning.
Spot and oil treatment: arm rests, head rests and seat fronts where body oils have darkened the pile.
Cleaning matched to the fibre: low-moisture for cotton and viscose velvet, a controlled clean for polyester velvet.
Pile grooming and drying: the pile is brushed uniform while it dries so there are no crushed patches or dry lines.

Other fine fabrics we clean

Linen: absorbs spills fast and water-marks easily. Low-moisture cleaning and even drying keep the colour level.
Viscose and rayon: beautiful, and the most water-sensitive fibre on a lounge. Wet it wrong and it browns or goes stiff. Always low-moisture, always tested first.

Chenille and boucle: textured weaves that trap soil and snag under a scrubbing brush. Cleaned gently, groomed after.

Polyester velvet can take a controlled clean. Cotton and viscose velvet should not be steam cleaned, because the moisture crushes the pile and can leave water marks. We match the method to the fibre after testing.

Vacuum with the pile using a soft brush head, blot spills straight away with a dry white cloth, and never rub. For anything more than a fresh spill, use a spot cleaner made for fine fabrics or call us. Rubbing is what ruins velvet.

Usually crushed or misdirected pile, not dirt. The area dried with the fibres lying a different way. Professional grooming while damp brings it back in most cases.

Yes, they are the most common velvet job we do. The oil is broken down, the area cleaned and the pile groomed. Marks that have built up for years lighten a great deal and often disappear.
